Narrative Based Music Videos

Some music videos have a narrative instead of or as well as having performance band shots.
Narratives are important in some music videos as they construct the characters and how we are meant to relate to them. this is important in music videos where feelings are involved like "The Man who Can't Be Moved" where the intended use is for the personal relationship reason seen in Bulmer and Katz' uses and gratification theory.

The Basic structure of a narrative according to Todorov's narrative theory is as follows:

  • Equilibrium - Man is on the corner where he met his girlfriend.
  • Disruption - Comes in the form of memories of past times and hopes of the future.
  • New Equilibrium - Man is still left on the corner where he is still waiting for his girlfriend.
In this case the narrative is circular so the equilibrium and new equilibrium are the same and he is left in the same situation as he was before

Group/Band Shots

The group shot is a common convention which is conformed to in almost every music video and in some is almost exclusive like in the Teriyaki Boyz song "Heartbreaker" (Left). This shot is used because it show the artist playing the song which they have written and recorded and having the band in the video for the song is iconic. however in some videos this convention is subverted like in the Arctic Monkeys "When the Sun Goes Down" video where they do not appear to perform but instead play minor cameo roles where they are leaving a building and getting into a car.

The Script, Genre Research

The Script are part of the alternative music genre which is an umbrella term for underground music derived from punk in the 1960's and 70's.  Alternative music emerged in the 1980's and continued to grow during the 1990's. Bands like R.E.M, Oasis, Weezer and The Strokes are included in this genre. There are many sub genres like indie, britrock and Grunge for example.
The common conventions seen in Alternative music are the use of common instruments which are the Guitar, Bass and Drums. These all appear in the Script's video (Previous Post) and we will conform to this convention of Alternative music as it is important to use band shots with instruments as they are important pieces of iconography within the genre.

The Man Who Cant Be Moved Video

This is the original video for The Script's, The Man Who Cant Be Moved

Choice of Song

The song we have selected for our Advanced portfolio in media is The Script's song, The Man Who Can't Be Moved.

The Script are and Irish, London based, Alternative rock band consisting of members Danny O'Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power.

For the purposes of being accurate we will also use 3 members and the theme of the video will be similar in the way that one of the band members will act as the Man Who Can't be Moved character. However we do not want to use too many of the elements seen in the original video for our production.

Choice Of Song

In our brainstorm, the group came up with a list of possible songs that we could have used
  • Ed Sheeran - The A Team - Alternative/Folk
  • Far East Movement - Rocketeer - RnB/Hip Hop
  • Katy B - On A Mission -
  • Adele - Rolling In The Deep - Soul
  • Florence An The Machine - You've Got The Love - Indie/Alternative
  • Evanescence - Everybody's Fool - Symphonic Metal
  • Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar - RnB/Soul
  • Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor - Indie/Alternative
  • The Script - The Man Who Cant Be Moved - Alternative
The Group chose The Man Who Cant Be Moved by The Script. The reason for this was because we all had good ideas for the video production and could all agree on the choice.

The Task

At the start of this project my task is to create a promotional package for the release of a new album including a music video that me and my group, including Megan McCarthy and Gemma Vernon, will create. I will also produce two ancillary tasks which will be an album cover for the release and a website for the band.
