Narrative Based Music Videos

Some music videos have a narrative instead of or as well as having performance band shots.
Narratives are important in some music videos as they construct the characters and how we are meant to relate to them. this is important in music videos where feelings are involved like "The Man who Can't Be Moved" where the intended use is for the personal relationship reason seen in Bulmer and Katz' uses and gratification theory.

The Basic structure of a narrative according to Todorov's narrative theory is as follows:

  • Equilibrium - Man is on the corner where he met his girlfriend.
  • Disruption - Comes in the form of memories of past times and hopes of the future.
  • New Equilibrium - Man is still left on the corner where he is still waiting for his girlfriend.
In this case the narrative is circular so the equilibrium and new equilibrium are the same and he is left in the same situation as he was before
